Today’s first reading Elijah is taken up to heaven, body and soul. He doesn’t die. He asked Elisha what he wanted before he departed and Elisha said he wanted twice Elijah’s spirit. After Elijah departed, Elisha was able to part the Jordan river and cross on dry land.
In the gospel, Jesus told his disciples how to act when giving alms. Don’t let everyone know. When fasting, clean your face. When praying, do it in private. He didn’t want anyone boasting about their actions for the Lord. He called those people hypocrites.
