Today’s first reading is for the state that a person is in at the time of conversion and baptism. Paul preferred celibacy, so he told the people who were not married to stay that way. He thought it was better in order to do what is right in the eyes of the Lord.

In the gospel, Luke told of the sermon of Jesus like in Matthew’s chapter 5. Instead of stating seven blessed statements, Luke has four blessed and four woes. The woes are: the rich, the ones who are full, those who laugh, and those who others speak well of.
