In today’s first reading, God gives some spirit he gave to Moses to the 70 elders and they start prophesying. Two elders that were not there were also prophesying, but someone told Moses that it was wrong. Moses said “Would that all the people of the LORD were prophets!” Amen!

In the second reading, James points out our living not as the Lord wants for us. We take the wages from the workers and we even killed the righteous one. God will stand in judgement on the last day.

In the gospel, John told Jesus that someone who doesn’t follow Him was driving out demons in His name and should be stopped. Jesus said that if that is happening, then they cannot speak ill of Him. “Whoever is not against us is for us” Then the gospel turns to Jesus saying that if you sin with hand, cut it off, with your foot, cut it off, with the eye, pluck it out. Better that than to be thrown into the fires of Gehenna.

This reminds me of the poem Mother Teresa wrote on a wall in Calcutta, https://www.mercyhsb.com/uploaded/eNews_graphics/Mother_Teresa_Do_it_anyway.pdf
