In today’s first reading, another prophet says prepare for the coming of the Lord. “I see him, though not now; I behold him, though not near: A star shall advance from Jacob, and a staff shall rise from Israel.”
In the gospel, the chief priests and elders questioned the authority of Jesus preaching in the temple. Jesus challenged them by asking if John the Baptist’s baptisms were from heaven or earth? The chief priests discussed it and then told Jesus they could not say. Jesus said “Neither shall I tell you by what authority I do these things”
