December 17, 2024 Tuesday of the Third Week of Advent

Today’s first reading is from the death bed of Jacob. He is speaking to his sons and foretelling of their power and the fate of the world. His son Judah will rule, the fourth son, not the eldest. My commentary says that the end of the reading is a prophesy fulfilled first by David and then Jesus. Again, prepare for the coming of the Lord.
in the gospel, the first part of Matthew, recounts the lineage of Jesus. Fourteen generations from Abraham to David and another 14 generations to the Babylonian exile and another 14 generations to Joseph. I never understood this because Joseph is not the biological father.
