In today’s first reading, Ahab was doing evil killing people for his selfish gain, so the Lord sent Elijah to tell the king that he would surely die as did his that he had killed and all of his descendants. Ahab put on sackcloth and was remorse for what he had done, so the Lord showed mercy. The responsorial psalm says, “Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned”
In the gospel, it is a continuation of the sermon on the mount, Matthew 5. Jesus said to love your enemies and pray for your persecutors. He said Don’t the pagans love their friends? Go beyond that and love everyone. He also said, “So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.” Wow! Perfection? From a human? I will strive toward it.
