In today’s first reading, Malachi, which means messenger, delivers the message of the coming of Elijah. He was referring to the coming of John the Baptist who would also be a messenger for Jesus. John the Baptist would prepare the way for Jesus’ ministry.
In the gospel, John the Baptist is born to Elizabeth and Zechariah. As Zechariah was naming John from what the angel told him, his voice returned and he was praising God for the gift of his son. The people who witnessed his return of speech thought that the child was touched by God and would do great things.
Holy Spirit guide me through Advent.
